- National security risks associated with dependence on foreign fuel sources and acts of terrorism
- National security risks associated with exporting vast amounts of capital, contributing more than half of our yearly total national trade deficit
- General health and safety issues related to mining, transportation, processing, consumption and disposal of fuels and wastes
